Barra
Head lighthouse is perched on the edge on massive cliffs which drop
sheer on most sides. Only two routes of descent to the sea are possible.
One goes down a knife edge arete with a fiersome "granny stopper"
near the bottom, while the other is a long and loose descent through
bands of inquisitive Puffins and gulls, through the light's rubbish
dump and down some very loose ground indeed. Neither is recommended
for those of a sane disposition! The light is locked but, as you can
see, the old cottages are open and may be used for shelter, although
they are in a bad state of repair. |

Atmosphere
abounds here with various rooms bearing testament to storm bound
travellers taking shelter, often for days at a time. Old machinery
manuals lie around and the ever present Atlantic wind sighs
through the deserted and eerie corridors.
Not a place for the fainthearted to spend a night! |
