Barra Head lighthouse Barra Head lighthouse is perched on the edge on massive cliffs which drop sheer on most sides. Only two routes of descent to the sea are possible. One goes down a knife edge arete with a fiersome "granny stopper" near the bottom, while the other is a long and loose descent through bands of inquisitive Puffins and gulls, through the light's rubbish dump and down some very loose ground indeed. Neither is recommended for those of a sane disposition! The light is locked but, as you can see, the old cottages are open and may be used for shelter, although they are in a bad state of repair. Inside Barra Head lighthouse cottage Atmosphere abounds here with various rooms bearing testament to storm bound travellers taking shelter, often for days at a time. Old machinery manuals lie around and the ever present Atlantic wind sighs through the deserted and eerie corridors.
Not a place for the fainthearted to spend a night!
