Canoeing on Loch Ard

Canoeing on Loch Ard
These are some pictures from my canoeing trip with the Cap'n on LochArd, at the beginning of the new millennium. It was a pretty cold day but without any wind so I suppose it was fairly enjoyable! The place we launched from is at the eastern end of the loch where the main road runs almost at water level. It's very boggy and smelly but gives quick and easy access from the road, which is not to be scoffed at when you're carrying two canoes, dodging the tourist traffic! There are three islands on the loch which we visited, the largest being Eilean Gorm and a perfect spot for a tea and tiffin session. One of the smaller islands has the remains of Duke Murdoch's Castle but this is no more than a ruin, in fact we couldn't tell it was a castle but a lovely place nonetheless. Stay away from the umarked island at the western end of the loch as this is inhabited by migrating geese and it's not a good idea to disturb them.
